TSA introduces new rules for carry-on luggage

New rules instituted by the Transportation Security Administration, effective on June 30, limit the size of containers with powdery substances in carry-on bags on flights bound to the United States from overseas.

These substances including protein powders, flour, sugar, ground coffee, spices, and cosmetics, must be put into a container of a maximum size of 12 ounces, about the size of a soda can.  Powders in larger containers may be subject to additional screening, by X-ray machines or by hand.

According to the website SmarterTravel (www.smartertravel.com) baby formula, medicines and human remains will all be considered exempt from the rule.

The new restrictions are a reaction to a failed terrorist plot foiled last year in Australia, SmarterTravel said.
