Girls on the Run

A new season of Girls on the Run is back. Registration is open and filling fast. The first team meeting was held on Aug. 16 at the Cordova Family Resource Center’s new location on Main Street. Girls on the Run focuses on empowering girls to be independent thinkers, enhance their problem-solving skills and make decisions using an experience-based curriculum that integrates running. The program runs through Oct. 27, every Tuesday and Thursday, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. for grades 3-6. The cost is $100 per participant. Full scholarships are available. Cordova Itinerate Public Health Nurse visit

The Cordova Itinerate Public Health Nurse will be in Cordova from Aug. 13-17 for back-to-school immunizations, well child/developmental screens, STD screens and will have Narcan kits available. To schedule an appointment, call Sue Webb at 907-424-4547 or 907-465-1245.

Cordova Fungus Festival

The Cordova Fungus Festival will be held from Aug. 31-Sept. 2, hosted at the Cordova Center with excursions throughout the surrounding Chugach National Forest. The 12th annual event features workshops, the Wild Harvest Feast, guided forays, speakers, kids’ activities, a wine and cheese mixer, and more. For more information, visit www.cordovafungusfest.com

Smoke n’ Guns

The Cordova Chapter of Friends of NRA’s fundraising pre-event, Smoke n’ Guns, will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28 at the Powder House. The event is free and is open to the public. Event proceeds help support local shooting sports, educational programs and shooting range development.

Cordova Chapter FNRA Annual Banquet

Cordova’s annual Friends of NRA main banquet will be at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31 at the Powder House. Banquet tickets are on sale now at the Powder House, located at 1.5 Mile Copper River Highway. Proceeds support shooting sports, educational programs and range improvements.

‘Bloodline’ at Copper River Gallery

Rachel Hoover’s mixed media art exhibit “Bloodline” will be in the Copper River Gallery in the Cordova Museum until Aug. 25, located within the Cordova Center. The Cordova Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

Wild Harvest Feast

Copper River Watershed Project will celebrate the harvest with a wild foods dinner featuring fall coho salmon and locally sourced ingredients, plus desserts and a silent auction from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Copper River Watershed Project on Main Street. Summer Lunch Art Program

The Cordova Family Resource Center is offering a free summer lunch art program Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to noon for ages 2 to 7 and noon to 1 p.m. for ages 8 to 13. Join them at the CFRC/BIONIC Youth Center on Main Street for art projects and a bag lunch.

Summer Reading Program

Cordova’s Summer Reading Program is at 1 p.m. every Wednesday at The Cordova Public Library. Sign up at the library to enjoy workshops for ages 5 and up.

Al-Anon in Cordova

Al-Anon for friends and family of alcoholics meets 7 p.m. Mondays at the Wellness Center (old DMV office). For more information, contact Katie at 907-965-5909.

Food pantry services

The Little Chapel is administering Salvation Army extension food pantry services. People needing assistance can pick up food on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Little Chapel. In an emergency at other times, call the Little Chapel at 907-424-3629. Native Village of Eyak administers food distribution on behalf of the Food Bank of Alaska.
