Rachel Hoover with her son Sulho, 2, forage for fungus along Power Creek Road on Wednesday, Aug. 29 with close friend Raven Madison. “Raven and I have this weird thing where we’ll just be driving along and I’ll get an itch that this is a good place to look,” Hoover said. “We both get out of the car and start hiking around and Raven always finds a chicken!” she added, referring to the edible orange mushrooms, Laetiporus sulphureus, commonly known as Chicken of the Woods. Hoover recommends cooking these mushrooms really well in butter, “They taste just like chicken!” she said.
