Hello again. With the legislature adjourned until January, it has been nice to have the time to visit with constituents to get their thoughts on our work this past year and on what’s ahead in the coming year. This month, I also had the opportunity to travel to the Kodiak Island village of Old Harbor for the community’s dedication of the airport runway’s expansion from 2,700 feet to 4,525 feet on Tuesday, Aug. 7th.
This important infrastructure project was part of the United States Armed Forces Innovative Readiness Training Program in collaboration with the city of Old Harbor, the Old Harbor Native Corporation and the Alaska Department of Public Transportation and Public Facilities. The project began in 2012 and involved hundreds of military personnel over the years, many of them Marines.
The runway expansion project is a major component of Old Harbor’s efforts to enhance economic development and increase employment opportunities for community members.
SB 15 Signed into Law
On Friday, July 13th, the governor signed Senate Bill 15 into law. The bill, which I sponsored, prohibits the possession, sale, and exchange of electronic smoking devices, including their component liquid or vapor products, to anyone under 19. Provisions of SB 15 are effective Jan. 1, 2019.
Around the District
Thanks to Kodiak McDonald’s owner Mike Davidson and general manager Gracie Logan and their staff for a tour of their restaurant on Thursday, Aug. 9th. The facility provides employment to many local residents and is often the first part-time job for teenagers.
Best wishes to students and educators this school year. Please use caution and keep an eye out for kids when you are traveling near school sites.
Local Elections in October
Thank you to all of those who are running for office in the municipal and borough government and school district elections. I appreciate your willingness to serve District P’s residents in these capacities.
Municipal elections take place Tuesday, Oct. 2nd. The deadline to register to vote in the election in Sunday, Sept. 2nd. That will also let you vote in the Alaska general election on Tuesday, Nov. 6th.
