Coast Guard medevacs burn victim

A 28-year-old crew member aboard the bulk carrier Ever Living was medevaced by the U.S. Coast Guard from 57 miles southeast of Dutch Harbor on Sept. 22, after suffering burns while working on the 1,099-foot ship.

Crew from Air Station Kodiak aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter hoisted the patient and transported him to Dutch Harbor for further care and transport to Anchorage.

The Ever Living was some 621 miles from Dutch Harbor when the Coast Guard was notified. The Coast Guard instructed the vessel master to transit toward Dutch Harbor and directed a Dolphin helicopter aircrew at Dutch Harbor to prepare for the medevac.

Chief Petty Officer Seth Caro, District 17 operational unit controller, said the Ever Living was told to transit toward Dutch Harbor to get within range of the Dolphin helicopter, to lessen the flight time for the injured crew member.

Weather on scene was six-foot seas, with 17 mph winds.
