Museum Memories

The Museum receives numerous requests for research of one type or another throughout the year and one we recently filled was regarding the major snowfalls in Cordova’s past. A meteorologist in Juneau was interested in snowfall amounts for 1955 and 1964 in December and February respectively.

On Dec. 29, 1955, The Cordova Times headlines proclaimed, “Cordova Nearly Paralyzed in Battle with Elements,” as the worst storm in many years damaged buildings, smashed cars, destroyed garages and knocked out power. Hip-deep snow, slush and water kept every able-bodied man in town busy as rain changed to snow and then snow would change back to sleet and rain. Although this photo is not from 1955, it does give a taste of a winter of heavy snowfall on Cordova’s first street.
