Marine safety instructor course set for April 23-28 in Seward

A marine safety instructor course will be offered by the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association April 23-28 in Seward.

The MSIT is an intensive, train-the-trainer course that prepares individuals to effectively teach cold water survival procedures, use of marine safety equipment and vessel safety drills. It includes hands-on experience in survival equipment use and procedures.

The course also covers preparation for emergencies, cold water near drowning, hypothermia, cold-water survival, survival equipment procedures and onboard drills, risk assessment, ergonomics and methods of instruction.  Upon completion of the course, participants will be prepared to teach AMSEA’s Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor training, pending Coast Guard authorization.

The cost is $995 and students will be responsible for their own transportation, food and lodging.  The course is open to anyone interested in marine safety training.

Three full scholarships, to cover tuition, transportation, food and lodging are being offered for Bristol Bay commercial harvesters living in Naknek or Dillingham, thanks to a team effort of AMSEA and Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association. To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must fish commercially, and agree to teach at least two Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor classes in the Bristol Bay region prior to the 2019 salmon season.

Those interested in applying for the scholarship or for more information about the course should call AMSEA at 1-907-747-3287 or log on to https://www.amsea.org/bbrsdatrainingscholoarships .
