Lady Wolverines top Redington and Houston

Cordova’s Lady Wolverines continued their fast start to the 2018-19 basketball season, topping 3A Redington 38-34 and 3A Houston 41-32 in road action on Dec. 21 and Dec. 22.

The wins improved their early season record to 3-2 and coupled with a victory over 4A Kodiak on Dec. 15, gave them a three-game win streak against bigger schools going into a much-deserved Christmas break.

The early season success from the veteran CHS squad, which includes five seniors, comes on the heels of only a week’s break between the end of a trip to 2A State in volleyball and the start of basketball with five away games in a two-week span.

Top scorers in the win over Redington were Riley Butler with 16 points and Abby Bourgeois with 11. Jieller Tabara led the scoring against Houston with 10 points; Bourgeois and Cali Sjostedt each added 8.

The Lady Wolverines will resume play on January 2-5, 2019, at the Rally the Regions tournament in Anchorage. Their first home games will be against Conference foe Su-Valley on Jan.11-12 in Cordova.

In JV action on Dec. 21-22, the Cordova girls won 2 out of 3 games at the Lumen Christi Tournament versus Lumen and Birchwood varsity teams.  The JV squad was led by Alana Esguerra, Cali Sjostedt, Inga Arvidson and Gwethalyn Jacob.
