Rally the Regions title eludes Lady Wolverines

Cordova’s Lady Wolverines had to settle for second place at this year’s Rally the Regions tournament in Anchorage, topping Wrangell in the third day of round-robin action, but losing to the same opponent the next day in the title game.

Led by 20 points from Abby Bourgeois and 14 from Riley Butler, Cordova topped the Wolves 52-42 on Friday, Jan. 4. The loss gave Wrangell and Scammon Bay identical 2-1 records for the tournament, so a one-minute three-point shooting contest between pairs of players from each team was used to determine Cordova’s opponent in the Saturday championship game.

The Wrangell duo of Maddy Harding and Helen Decker drained seven treys in 60 seconds to gain a second match-up with Cordova.

This time Wrangell exploded for 22 points in the fourth quarter to win 51-41, so each team defeated the other by 10 points in their pair of games. Riley Butler topped Cordova scoring with 11 points.

Cordova cruised through the first two rounds of the tournament. Bourgeois hit three three-pointers en route to a game high 17 points, with eight different Wolverines scoring in a 48-25 victory over Selawik on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

The Wolverines again used balanced scoring to top Scammon Bay 46-35 on Thursday, Jan. 3. This time seven different Cordova players scored, led by Bourgeois and Jieller Tabara with 12 points apiece.
