High rolling Wolverines begin conference play this weekend

The Cordova girls and boys basketball teams are off to a fast start, and will play their first conference games of the season here this weekend.

SuValley, a traditionally solid 2A opponent, will be in town for varsity games on Friday, Jan. 11, and JV plus varsity games on Saturday, Jan. 12.

After winning the Rally the Regions tournament in Anchorage on Jan. 2-5, the Cordova boys are a perfect 6-0, while the Lady Wolverines have racked up a 5-3 record against stiff competition that included both 3A and 4A opponents prior to finishing second in Rally the Regions play.

Spearheading the Cordova boys attack have been juniors Kaiden Graves, Christian Adams, and Evan Gatton; while Abby Bourgeois and Riley Butler have led the way for a Lady Wolverine squad featuring an all-senior starting five.

The Lady Wolverines will likely see many familiar faces on the SuValley squad that challenged them in Conference volleyball playoffs here just a month ago.

The only other home regular-season conference basketball games will be on Feb. 16-17, when Cordova faces Effie Kokrine in an unusual Tuesday-Wednesday set of games.

The series against SuValley will begin with late varsity games on Friday, due to the arrival of the ferry at 8 p.m. Tipoff for the boys match-up will be at 8:30 p.m., followed with the girls at 10 p.m.

On Saturday, the JV girls will play first at 4 p.m., followed by JV boys at 5:30 p.m., varsity girls at 7 p.m., and varsity boys at 8:30 p.m.
