Poetry: Where I’m from

By Nash Hahn

For The Cordova Times

I am from the towering spruces.

From mud baseball fields and roofed playgrounds.

I am from the grizzly infected wilderness,

Where you always felt watched.

I am from barnacle covered ferry docks,

From the Aurora Borealis’s glow to killer whales breaching.

I am from the consistent downpour of rain that mentally took a toll.

I am from seine nets that stretched for miles and brought up hundreds of fish within one load.

I am from the Popeye spinach on my dad’s office window sill.

I am from homemade zip lines through a mossy ocean front property.

I am from AC and local businesses.

I am from ice worm festivals in below freezing weather.

That is where I’m from.

Nash Hahn, 17, is the son of former Cordova City Manager Scott A. Hahn. The Hahns lived in Cordova for roughly six years and owned a home in Cordova for nine years. Currently, Scott Hahn is the city manager of Rifle, CO after having lived in Skagway until July. “Cordova probably remembers my wife, Gay, more than I for all the energy she put into schools and events,” he said. “Always hoping for a visit back to Cordova sometime. Cordova made a permanent mark in our hearts and I think the poem reflects that.”
