New technology enhances search and rescue operations

Two A-Star helicopters used by Alaska State troopers and Alaska Wildlife Troopers for search and rescue operations are now equipped with hardware and software updates that include cameras with long range visibility features and more detail to assist in searches.

Last year alone, the troopers participated in 535 search and rescue operations, utilizing the two specially equipped helicopters based in Anchorage and Fairbanks.

The new technology, purchased earlier this year, is now installed in both helicopters, said Tim DeSpain, public information officer for the troopers. These helicopters are used primarily for land-based search and rescue operations, while those over open water are covered by the U.S.

Coast Guard rescue crews, he said.

“The bottom line is this equipment will save lives,” said Col. Doug Massie, director of Alaska Wildlife Troopers. “It allows us to be more efficient, to do a better job with our limited resources.”

Troopers reminded adventurers with plans to travel in the backcountry to be prepared for emergencies, to advise others of planned trip details and bring gear appropriate for weather conditions, plus a functioning communications device should a rescue be needed.
