A 38-year-old crewman suffering from symptoms of a heart attack was medevaced some 65 miles east of Kodiak on April 1 by the Coast Guard to Air Station Kodiak and taken to Kodiak Providence Hospital.

Lt. Cmdr. Orion Bloom, search and rescue mission coordinator for the case, said a health technician was part of the MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew that hoisted the patient from the 49-foot longer Resurrection that evening. “When we know that a survivor is experiencing symptoms that might benefit from a level of care beyond what our rescue swimmers are trained to provide, we do our best to provide that higher level of care,” he said.

Coast Guard watchstanders in the 17th District Command Center in Juneau got the medevac request about 9 p.m. on April 1 from the master of the fishing vessel.

Conditions at the time of the hoist were calm seas, light winds and 10 miles visibility.
