Rescuers from the Coast Guard, Alaska Air National Guard and good Samaritans responded to a downed aircraft with three people on board in Prince William Sound in the area of Cascade Bay, 20 miles southwest of Valdez today, Tuesday, May 21.

Coast Guard officials said two of those rescued were injured and were taken by an Alaska Air National Guard rescue helicopter crew to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. The extent of their injuries was unknown.

The third person, whom the Coast Guard said was unresponsive, was transported by a Coast Guard Station Valdez small boat crew to Whittier emergency medical services. The Coast Guard later confirmed that the unresponsive individual was deceased.

The Coast Guard responded after police in Cordova told them at 2 p.m. that a Cessna A185F Skywagon crashed into Cascade Bay and all three people on board were in the water.

Further details were not immediately available.
