Fire danger rises in Chugach National Forest

U.S. Forest Service officials say fire danger in Chugach National Forest was raised to very high over most of the forest as of June 25, and urged campers to use caution when building campfires, which are currently allowed within the forest.

The Cordova area weather forecast calls for daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s, under partly cloudy skies, with no rain in sight.

Campfires should be built in established fire pits or within a rock ring, on gravel or dirt. It is also important to build campfires in a place protected from wind gusts and to keep a bucket of water and a shovel nearby to help extinguish the fire. Extra wood and burnable items should be kept away from the fire site and fires should ever be left unattended.

Campers should extinguish all campfires completely before leaving the area.
