Commercial, sport and subsistence salmon harvesters alike in the Bristol Bay region used flares, fireworks and bonfires on June 28 to send a visual SOS about their concern over the need for protections via the Clean Water Act for the Bristol Bay watershed. This SOS bonfire was lit by fish harvesters in Koliganek on the eve of the deadline for public comments on the controversial Pebble mine draft environmental impact statement prepared by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
