A crowd estimated by police officers and security guards at several thousand people gathered at outside the Alaska Airlines Center on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus to urge legislators to override Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s line item vetoes of $444 million in state services, including 40 percent of the University of Alaska budget.
Several dozen speakers urged the crowd to contact their legislators in support of the override. Support also came via music from the Grammy award winning Alaska band Portugal the Man. Legislators meanwhile remained split on the issue, meeting separately in Juneau and Wasilla.
