Cordova student wins GCI scholarship

Cordova Junior-Senior High School student Oliva Carroll is one of 50 Alaskans who will receive $2,000 for the 2019-2020 academic year.

The GCI Scholarship Program is in partnership with the Alaska Community Foundation. The program was launched over 20 years ago and seeded with $100,000 in scholarships in 2019, with a goal of growing Alaska’s next generation of leaders.

Since the program began, GCI has awarded $6 million in scholarships to hundreds of Alaska students attending accredited colleges and vocational and trade schools nationwide.

This year’s recipients represent 46 schools in 36 communities statewide. Awardees plan to seek a degree or certification with a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) focus, with an intent to return to Alaska to begin their careers.

GCI announced the scholarship winners on July 11. Over the past five years, GCI has donated over $10 million in cash, products, scholarships and grants to Alaska organizations. Through its GCI Community Service program more than 660 GCI employees who received paid leave to volunteer, volunteered nearly 8,200 hours through this program.
