4 safe after Mayday, abandon ship

Four people aboard the fishing vessel Ariel near Port Gravina abandoned ship on Tuesday, Aug. 27, after issuing a Mayday broadcast about a fire onboard, and were rescued by the crew of one of two Good Samaritan boats, Coast Guard officials said.

The Ariel became fully engulfed in flames and then reportedly sunk in 275 feet of water.

The four people aboard the Ariel were rescued from their skiff, the Coast Guard said. There were no injuries and nobody entered the water.

The Coast Guard is monitoring the area and a salvage vessel was in transit to the scene to conduct a salvage assessment.

No further details were immediately available.

Port Gravina lies on the northern edge of Orca Bay, some 22 miles northwest of Cordova.
