Cordova allocated $11,417 in PILT funds

Cordova has received a total of $11,417 under a U.S. Department of the Interior’s Payment in Lieu of Taxes program, which allocates money to subdivisions of states underpaid via PILT.

Cordova share in a total of $283,605 announced on Tuesday, Nov. 5 by the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development. Settlements were allocated to each community based on population, similar to the formula used for the annual PILT payment.

DCCED had received notice that local governments in Alaska were believed to have been underpaid federal PILT monies in 2015, 2016 and/or 2017. Last year DCCED notified communities that the state had joined in the class action and County, Utah v. United States and that the state would receive and distribute PILT program funds to those included in the settlement if and when those claims were paid.

DCCED annually distributes the PILT funds received by the state on behalf of municipalities in the unorganized borough. Payments to Alaska’s boroughs are distributed directly by the Department of the Interior.
