Letter to the Editor: Thank you, Anita Smyke, for Cordova’s Grand Piano

I would like to thank Anita Smyke for making possible the acquisition of the Cordova Center’s piano, a Diamond edition Schimmel grand piano.

Recognizing that the North Star Theater was lacking a decent piano, Anita researched and selected the piano, and then donated to and fundraised for its purchase (more than $30,000!) Since the piano’s arrival less than two years ago, it has been played by famous jazz and classical pianists from Germany, Azerbaijan, Spain and the U.S.

For myself, the opportunity last spring to hear Johnny Rice’s performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue on this fabulous grand piano brought tears to my eyes! In addition to these world-class concerts, Anita (an accomplished pianist in her own right) has played our new piano to accompany high school concerts, last year’s production of Little Shop of Horrors and will be the pianist for Cordova’s upcoming production of Mamma Mia.

Thank you, Anita, for your generosity to our community and musical dedication!
