Cordova’s Salvation Army Food Pantry usually stocks staples like cereal, potatoes, canned vegetables and milk. However, as Christmas approaches, the definition of “staple” expands to include plastic Darth Vaders, Minecraft figures, basketballs, remote-controlled aerial drones and other gift items.

A Tuesday, Dec. 17 Christmas food and toy distribution event dispensed goods to 174 people, said Jenni Ragland, service extension director for the Alaska Division of the Salvation Army.

“We look for opportunities to be able to assist individuals in practical ways — this is the food support that we offer to the community on an ongoing basis,” Ragland said. “As for the toys, that’s just the spirit of giving at Christmas. We all have fond memories of waking up on Christmas morning and seeing gifts waiting under the tree. To be able to provide that to some families who may not be able to do that for their children is, I think, just a wonderful thing to do.”

Preparing for the event, volunteer organizer Debra Ethier was afraid that no one would show up. Her fears were quickly allayed when a crowd of dozens arrived, leaving the food pantry with standing room only. As volunteers scurried back and forth, the atmosphere was hectic but good-natured.

Each family participating in the event received one large toy per child, plus a smaller “stocking stuffer” item like crayons and fidget spinners. Families also received a box full of food items and a $25 gift card from AC Value Center. Gifts were carried out in backpacks, which were given away for use as shopping bags.

The Salvation Army Food Pantry, located off First Street, reopened Nov. 23 after a seven-month closure.

“We have heard time and time again how eager Cordova is to have the Salvation Army be part of the community,” Ragland said. “I’m glad we have their continued support and generosity, and look forward to a long-lasting relationship.”

Food donations can be made inside Wells Fargo or AC Value Center, or by calling Pastor Steve Leppert at 907-429-6262.
