NPS seeks public response on proposed changes

The National Park Service is accepting public comment through Feb. 15 on proposed changes in park compendiums in Alaska.

A compendium, one for each national park in Alaska, is a compilation of designations, closures and restrictions adopted under the discretionary authority within regulations covering national parks. It is a regulatory tool used to manage all of Alaska’s national parks.

Proposed changes for Alaska’s national parks include but are not limited to provisions covering the use of electronic bicycles, and hours that generators may be operated at Denali National Park’s Riley Creek, Savage River and Teklanika River campgrounds.

For Lake Clark National Park there is a proposal to require bear resistant electric fencing when camping along the coast, and for Katmai National Park relaxed parking restrictions at Lake Camp. For Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, there is a proposal to related to use of the Dyea Campground, as well as one for mandatory registration for overnight use of the Chilkoot trail during shoulder seasons.

Information on how to view all proposed changes and instructions on how to comment is available at nps.gov/locations/alaska/proposed-compendiums.htm. A written copy may be requested directly from a park or the National Park Service, 240 W. 5th Ave., Anchorage, AK 99501, Attn: Compendium.
