Lady Wolverines pick up win at Rex Rock Tipoff

Cordova’s Lady Wolverines traveled all the way to Pt. Hope, Alaska to pick up their first win of the season.

The CHS girls topped SuValley 49-35 in the first round of the Rex Rock Tipoff on Jan. 23. The Lady W’s had dropped a pair of games to SuValley in early season conference play, so defeating them three weeks later had to be especially rewarding.

The win did not come easily. SuValley led 19-15 at halftime. CHS edged ahead 27-26 after three quarters before exploding for 22 points in the last stanza.

Sophomore Cali Sjostedt topped Cordova with 17 points; Gwethalyn Jacob had her best game of the season, pouring in 10 points in the fourth quarter alone and finishing with 14, total.

Cordova faced Tikigaq (Pt. Hope) in the second round on Jan. 24. The Lady Wolverines gave the defending State 2A champions a stiff challenge.

Behind 19-11 after one quarter, CHS held Tikigaq to only three points, all on free throws, in the next eight minutes, to trail 22-18 at halftime. The rally continued in the third quarter, with Cordova tying the score 30-30, before Tikigaq pulled away in the final eight minutes to win 46-36.

Sjostedt was Cordova’s only player in double digits, with 15.

Hooper Bay cruised by Cordova 62-34 in the final game on Jan. 25. Jacob led CHS with 9 points; Sjostedt and Andrea Vargas had 7 apiece.

Tikigaq went 3-0 to win the tournament. Cordova’s Cali Sjostedt was selected to the All-Tournament team, and also won the free throw shooting contest.

Cordova’s next games will be in Fairbanks against conference foe Effie Kokrine on Feb. 10-11 followed by the Valdez Tournament on Feb. 13-15.
