Glennallen upsets Cordova in Homecoming final

CHS heads to conference playoffs at SuValley on March 12

After falling to Cordova 47-31 on Friday, March 6, the Glennallen Panthers bounced back to upset CHS 40-35 the next evening, which just happened to be the final home game of the season.

High-scoring senior Kaiden Graves led Cordova with 15 points in the first game, but CHS lost fellow offensive star Christian Adams with a sprained ankle early in the contest.

Rus Bradford picked up the slack for the Wolverines, scoring 13 points in a physical battle between the top two teams in the Aurora Conference.

In Saturday’s game, Glennallen played a zone defense throughout, taking advantage of the absence of Christian Adams to key on Graves.  A Panther defender seemed to be in his face on every three-point attempt, and Graves was held to a pair of two-pointers in the first half, and 4 for 4 shooting from the free throw line in the second half.

In the low scoring battle, Cordova led 13-6 at the quarter and 19-11 at halftime, but was held to only four points in the third quarter, all on free throws, to have a 23-20 lead with eight minutes to go.

Cordova continued to struggle on offense in the final period. Wolverine freshman Arthur Adams, Christian’s brother, provided all of Cordova’s scoring from the field with three three-pointers, which were the only field goals scored by CHS in the entire second half.

Glennallen’s Devin Speaks had 11 of his game high 13 points in the fourth quarter, and the Panthers shot 4 for 4 from the free throw line in the final minute as CHS fouled to stop the clock.   Arthur Adams topped Cordova with 12 points, all on three pointers.

The result was Cordova’s only loss in conference play this season.  With a 9-1 conference record and 19-4 overall mark, CHS will head to conference playoffs at SuValley beginning on March 12.
