Coast Guard postpones fishing vessel exams

Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Valdez is postponing Cordova’s commercial fishing vessel exams initially set for April 24 to April 29 until September out of caution for mariners because of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The exact dates were not announced.

MSU Valdez staff will be available by calling 907-795-5885 in Valdez for fishermen who prefer to have their exam conducted sooner. To schedule an exam, mariners need to provide the preferred date and time, slip number, type of vessel, size, name, color of vessel and owner contact information.

The dockside exams are designed to educate vessel operators and ensure vessel safety. The dockside exams focus on the safety of all crewmembers and ensure preparedness in emergency situations. The no-cost, no-fault exams are recommended for all fishing vessels.
