Letter to the Editor: Shorebird Festival and COVID-19

In order to keep our communities in Cordova, Alaska, and worldwide safe during coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreaks and consulting directives from the Center for Disease Control and Alaska Division of Public Health & Social Services, the Copper River Delta Shorebird Festival planning committee has decided that the Shorebird Festival will not go on as planned May 7-10.

We understand this is tough for everyone who was looking forward to enjoying this natural spectacle in beautiful Cordova, Alaska, but we all must do our part to control the spread of the virus.

The birds, however, are migrating north and will still be filling Hartney Bay, Alaganik Slough and the surrounding Chugach National Forest, feeding and resting as they head to their breeding grounds. We are looking into ways that we can enjoy, celebrate, and share the migration from our own respective perches both here in Cordova and elsewhere — stay tuned for new ways to connect with the Copper River Delta Shorebird Festival.

If you already registered for 2020, we would love to see you next year, May 6-9, 2021, when we will be back in person and celebrating our belated 30th anniversary! We can transfer your registration for you. Please contact us at festival@coppershorebird.com for more information.
