Sport, personal use fishing remain open

Alaska Department of Fish and Game officials say sport and personal use fishing statewide will remain open, consistent with published regulations for the 2020 season, subject to compliance with state of Alaska public health mandates.

While travel between communities is prohibited under current health mandates, Alaskans are allowed to travel to fishing locations, ADF&G officials said on Monday, April 13.

Certain guidelines are to e adhered to, however when traveling outside of one’s own community of residents to participate in sport or personal use fisheries.

Fishing activities should be conducted as close to the home residence as possible.

Everyone should be aware of local mandates authorized under the state’s public health mandate 12. Copies of all mandates are posted online at covid19.alaska.gov.

Provisions for the trip should be brought from the fisherman’s community. Do not plan on buying food, drinks or even fuel, if possible after leaving the community of origin and before returning home.

Practice social distancing while sport or personal use fishing and, it is strongly suggested, wear face coverings.

Adherence to these stipulations will allow Alaskans to fish and put food on their tables while protecting the health of themselves and others, ADF&G officials said.

Subsistence fishing remains open and unrestricted under current health mandates.
