The Cordova Public Library has announced that in celebration of National Poetry Month, they are co-hosting Cordova’s first ever virtual poetry slam. The event, in partnership with Alaska’s Online with Libraries Program (OWL), will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 27.

Poets, emerging voices and anyone with something to say can register for a three-minute time limit to deliver their original spoken performance. The all-vocal slam event is themed Spring Fever. Props, costumes, instruments, pre-recorded music and graphic overlays are not permitted.

To register, email Jillian Gold at jgold@cityofcordova.net by noon on Sunday, April 26. Include your full name, age bracket (elementary, high school, adult or mixed ages), and any questions about the event that you may have. If you are performing as a group act, include the group name in addition to all of the full names of group members. In accordance to Health Mandate 011, groups should only be made up of members of a household.

Those who successfully register will be emailed a Zoom meeting link prior to the event. A Zoom account is not required to participate; however, artists will need a device with a working microphone and camera, or access to a telephone if joining via teleconference. Those who wish to perform, but are unable to make the meeting time, may be allowed to pre-record a video for presentation at the event.

The live poetry slam will be recorded and only open to participating artists and judges during the event. Once the event is over, those who wish to watch the recording will be able to view an encoded file, available for one year. It will not be downloadable. Interested party requests and all other questions may be emailed to jgold@cityofcordova.net.
