Stevens warns constituents to keep virus at bay

Sen. Gary Stevens, R-Kodiak, is urging constituents to do their part to keep themselves and others safe as Alaska continues to see reports of COVID-19 outbreaks.

The state’s cumulative case count had reached over 500 by Wednesday, June 3, with double-digit cases reported on three days this week.

Several of the newly reported cases have come from the Kenai Peninsula, including the Homer-Anchor Point area. These cases may be related to multi-family celebrations occurring during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, Stevens said. State epidemiologists are actively investigating Covid-19 cases in the Kenai Peninsula, including outreach to numerous individuals who were part of the holiday weekend celebrations.

“The rising case count underscores the need for Alaskans to remain vigilant as the Covid-19 pandemic continues,” Stevens said. “I hope you will continue to follow public health guidelines on social distancing, wearing face coverings, hand washing, avoiding unnecessary travel, and staying home when you’re ill. These small steps can go a long way toward reducing your exposure to the virus.”
