8,025 apply for mortgage, rent relief

All eligible applicants among the 8,025 who submitted applications for federal CARES Act rent and mortgage relief will receive a one-time payment of up to $1,200, Alaska Housing Finance Corp. officials said Tuesday, June 30.

About half of the applications came from Anchorage and the rest from every other census area of the state, said Stacy Barnes, director of public affairs and government relations at AHFC.

Every applicant was advised that the verification process would begin on Wednesday, July 1, and the funds would be distributed for all qualified in July and August.

Each household represents an average of 2.74 members totaling 21,951 individuals applying for relief. Based on applicants’ self-reporting their average annual income loss is $21,880, with an average monthly housing payment of principal and interest of $1,417 for homeowners or $1,110 for renters.

AHFC randomized submissions and notified applicants via email of their placement. Applicants now need to provide verification of their loss of income and provide contact information for their mortgage servicer or landlord who will receive payment on the applicant’s behalf. A representative of AHFC will contact the applicant for required information and alaskahousingrelief.org will be updated weekly to show progress. Applicants are advised to be wary of scammers posing as representatives of AHFC, and to verify the legitimacy of an inquirer by confirming their unique alphanumeric number.
