Alaska COVID-19 count climbs to 1,323

55 new cases boost state infection rate to 1,323, nonresident caseload to 258

Two new cases of community residents testing positive for the COVID-19 virus have been confirmed by the Cordova Medical Response Team, on the heels of the city’s seventh positive case on July 8, city officials confirmed on Friday, July 10.

The municipal report said the two latest positive cases are travel-related and not community spread. State officials have been notified and contact tracing has begun. Contact tracing was already underway for the seventh case reported on July 8.

The city’s medical response team continues to remind residents to wear face coverings over the mouth and nose in public spaces, to socially distance by at least 6 feet, maintain a small social bubble, frequent public places only as necessary, to wash hands frequently and wipe down often touched surfaces with disinfecting wipes.

Statewide the number of residents infected rose to 1,323, and the number of infected nonresidents to 258. Eighty people have been hospitalized and 588 have recovered, including 17 new recoveries reported on July 9, state health officials said. The death toll remains at 17.

The two latest tests positive in Cordova are not included in the statewide case summary announced on July 10, which includes 55 people in 13 communities and four nonresidents.

The newest resident cases include Anchorage 21, Fairbanks 14, city of Kenai three, two each in Homer, North Pole and Wasilla, and one each in Eagle River, Juneau, Nome, Nome census area, Palmer, Seward and Willow.

Among the four nonresidents were two in the seafood industry and one in an unknown industry in the Bristol Bay and Lake & Peninsula boroughs, and one in tourism in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

A total of 141,931 tests have now been conducted. The average percentage of daily positive test for the previous three days as of July 8 was 1.46 percent.
