Valdez reports dangerous glacier breakup

The city of Valdez reported a heavy glacier separation event at Valdez Glacier July 7-8. Rolling icebergs produced by the event pose a serious danger, according to an announcement by the city. Community members are advised to keep clear from the face of Valdez Glacier and from floating ice in the area.

Large, irregularly shaped pieces of ice produced by the event may appear stable, but can move or roll over without warning, said Aaron Baczuk, emergency manager for the city of Valdez, in an online announcement. Slopes in the area, now no longer shielded by the glacier, are also at risk of landslides, which could produce dangerous waves, Baczuk said.
