AFN 2020 convention goes virtual

Board members of the Alaska Federation of Natives have voted to take their 2020 annual convention online, over health and safety concerns prompted by the continuing spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic in Alaska.

AFN President Julia Kitka said on Wednesday, Aug. 5, that it was a tough decision, but that the health and safety of delegates, participants and attendees had priority, given the number of elders and others coming to the convention annually from all over Alaska.

“We will miss it,” said Sheri Buretta, an AFN board member and convention committee chair, “but just as the rest of the world has had to do, we are adapting to extraordinary times and hopeful for the future.”

The theme for the 2020 convention is “Good Government, Alaskans Decide,” a nod toward the 2020 Census and upcoming elections.

The event was previously set to be held in mid-October at the Dena’ina Center in Anchorage.

Instead the virtual event will be online Oct. 15-16, featuring a combination of live presentations It will be viewable statewide via television, on KNBA radio, social media and video platforms, and webcast.
