Update: 66 more Alaska residents contract COVID-19

Passing of Bethel area, Fairbanks men boosts state’s pandemic death toll to 32

New cases of the novel coronavirus have stayed in the double digits for the past few days, boosting the statewide toll of infected Alaskans to 4,741, including 66 more cases announced on Sunday, Aug. 23, by the state health officials.

Alaska Department of Health and Social Services officials said that to date 1,559 of the residents infected have recovered.

New cases including 66 more residents in 14 communities were confirmed to have COVID-19, and a Fairbanks man with underlying health conditions has died, boosting the resident death toll to 32. On Saturday, Aug. 22, DHSS reported the death of a Bethel Census Area resident in his 50s, the 31st person to succumb.

A total of 201 people have been hospitalized with the virus, including three more people hospitalized on Aug, 22, bringing the total number of those currently hospitalized with COVID-related conditions to 48. Another 1,559 people are considered recovered.

New resident cases include 26 in Anchorage, 11 in Fairbanks, eight in Wasilla, six in Juneau, four in Palmer, two each in Eagle River and Kenai, and one each in Bethel, Bethel Census Area, Chugiak, Fairbanks North Star Borough, Girdwood, Nome Census Area and Soldotna.

No new nonresident cases were reported.

Two resident cases were removed from the list, bringing it to a total of 4,741. The total number of nonresident cases stands at 817.

The Municipality of Anchorage, including the Chugiak, Eagle River and Girdwood, continues to lead the state in COVID-19 cases, including 16 deaths, followed by the Fairbanks North Star Borough, with eight deaths, and Juneau, with one death.

The DHSS daily report reflects data from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. which is posted at noon daily on the Alaska Coronavirus Response Hub.

As of Aug. 22, 327,440 tests had been conducted. The average percentage of daily positive test for the previous seven days as of Aug. 22 was 1.74 percent.
