Update: Statewide virus total climbs to 6,724

3,654 cases remain active, 2,137 have recovered

Alaska’s novel coronavirus infection count rose by 267 cases over the Labor Day holiday weekend, plus the deaths of two residents, pushing the statewide infection total from the global pandemic to 6,724, including 5,833 residents and 891 nonresidents.

State health officials said that as of Tuesday, Sept. 8, 42 residents have died and 235 have been hospitalized.  Total recoveries are at 2,137 individuals.

Alaska Department of Health and Social Services officials reported 99 new cases on both Friday, Sept. 4 and Saturday, Sept. 5, then 32 more on Sunday, Sept. 6, and 35 on Monday, Sept. 7.

All 35 cases reported on Monday are Alaska residents, including 17 in Anchorage, four in Fairbanks, three in Juneau, two each in Utqiagvik and Wasilla, and one each in Homer, Kotzebue, North Pole, Northwest Arctic Borough, Palmer, Sitka and Unalaska.  No new nonresident cases were reported.

The latest individuals to succumb to the virus were an Eagle River man in his 80s and a Fairbanks woman also in her 80s. Both had underlying health conditions.

There are currently 36 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 hospitalized, plus five additional people considered under investigation for a total of 36 COVID-related hospitalizations.

The DHSS daily report reflects data from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. which is posted at noon daily on the Alaska Coronavirus Response Hub.

As of Sept. 7, 391,656 tests had been conducted. The average percentage of daily positive test for the previous seven days as of Sept.6 was 2.26 percent.
