HUD grant will aid Alaska Native veterans

Three Alaska Native housing authorities have received federal grants to help military veterans who are experiencing homelessness.

The funds made available through the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) include $207,316 for the Tlingit Haida Regional Housing Authority, $173,429 for the Cook Inlet Housing Authority and $41,991 for the AVCP Regional Housing Authority.

“Alaska is home to the highest veteran per capita rate in the nation, and among them are countless Alaska Natives who stepped up to fight for our country, our freedoms, and our way of life,” said Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, who announced the grants on Thursday, Aug. 27.

“As a veteran myself, ensuring that these exceptional men and women have the support they need to thrive in civilian life has been one of my highest priorities. I am confident that this funding will go a long way toward keeping our veterans off the street and providing them with the resources necessary to live lives of dignity. These veterans are heroes, and we will forever be indebted to them.”
