DMVA will provide quarantine facilities for four Bering Strait villages

An agreement coordinated by Rep. Neal Foster, D-Nome, will make Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs armories in Brevig Mission, Stebbins, Teller and Unalakleet available as temporary COVID-19 quarantine facilities if necessary.

“Through everyone’s collaborative efforts, these villages are better able to provide safe housing for those in need and to help protect our elders and others with underlying conditions,” Foster said, in a statement released on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Foster said he worked with Norton Sound Health Corp., Kawerak and DMVA officials to coordinate use of the armories on a temporary basis as needed because of the pandemic.

The Alaska Federation of Natives, at the request of Kawerak, also played a crucial role in facilitating the agreement with Gen. Torrence Saxe, adjutant general of the Alaska National Guard, the statement said.
