Update: Statewide COVID-19 total rises to 8,549

734 new cases of virus in Alaska in six days, including a nonresident airline pilot

New cases of the novel coronavirus in Alaska remain in triple digits, with 734 more individuals diagnosed in just six days, state health officials said.

Confirmation of 120 new cases on Tuesday, Sept. 29 came on the heels of 117 new cases on Monday, Sept. 28; 116 new cases on Saturday, Sept. 26, 128 cases on Friday, Sept. 25, and 142 on Thursday, Sept. 24, according to the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services. Four more deaths were also reported on Sunday, Sept. 27.

Resident cases have now reached a total of 7,721, with 3,856 remaining active, 3,865 recovered and 56 deceased. Nonresident cases to date stand at 953, with 459 recovered and another 494 active, according to the updated DHSS data dashboard.

told of an additional six residents case added to the data dashboard through data verification procedures and one nonresident subtracted.

New resident cases as of Sept. 29 included 118 in 17 communities, including 59 in Anchorage, 12 in Fairbanks, 11 in Wasilla, eight in Palmer, seven in Utqiagvik, six in Eagle River, two each in Kotzebue, Northwest Arctic Borough, Sitka and Soldotna, and one each in Aleutians West Census Area, Anchor Point, Bristol Bay and Lake Peninsula Boroughs, Chugiak, Juneau, Ketchikan and Valdez.

Two new nonresident cases were reported in Anchorage.

There have been a total of 288 hospitalizations since the novel coronavirus pandemic was first confirmed in Alaska. Health officials said 49 patients are currently hospitalized, including 36 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 who are hospitalized, and 13 additional patients considered people under investigation. Seven of these patients are on ventilators.

The state data dashboard is updated online daily at https://covid19.alaska.gov.

Most cases and the most deaths from the virus have been in the state’s largest population areas, led by the Municipality of Anchorage, the Fairbanks North Star Borough, and the city and borough of Juneau.

Statewide updates are provided online daily by state health officials on statewide COVID-19 dashboard summary updated daily at covid19.alaska.gov.

The DHSS daily report reflects data from midnight to 11:59 p.m. which is posted at noon daily on the Alaska Coronavirus Response Hub.

As of Sept. 28, 451,056 tests had been conducted, including 11,160 tests in the previous seven days, DHSS officials said. The average percentage of daily positive test for the previous seven days as of Sept. 28 was 2.67 percent.
