Injured harvester medevaced northwest of Cold Bay

Coast Guard crewmen from Kodiak on Tuesday, Oct. 20, medevaced a 26-year old fisherman suffering from eye and head pain from 100 miles northwest of Cold Bay to Cold Bay for further transport to Anchorage.

An Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew hoisted the patient at 6:55 a.m., from the fishing vessel Defender and then later transferred him to emergency medical services.

Watchstanders in the 17th Coast Guard District command center in Juneau received the medevac request at 7 p.m. Monday. The Defender was 170 miles from Cold Bay during the initial call for help. The Coast Guard watchstanders directed the launch of the Jayhawk aircrew from Forward Operating Location Cold Bay and diverted Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley as a secondary asset to assist if needed.

On-scene weather at the time of the rescue was an air temperature of 41, 20 mph winds and 10 miles visibility.
