Beyblade toys and toys themed around Disney’s “Frozen” were in high demand at a Dec. 15-17 Salvation Army giveaway. Thirty families participated in a three-night toy giveaway at the Salvation Army’s First Street facility, where each child received a small “stocking stuffer” toy and a larger toy worth about $20 or more, food bank coordinator Katherine Mead said.

With ample donations via the AC Value Center grocery store and some runoff from last year’s distribution event, there were more than enough items for Cordova’s kids, Mead said. Thanks to a partnership with the Cordova Public Library and Friends of the Cordova Public Library, kids were also able to take multiple books from a supply including classics such as “Madeline’s Rescue” and titles by Dr. Seuss. Parents also had the option to receive free gift wrap. Toy pickups were conducted by appointment in order to minimize the risk of novel coronavirus transmission.

Equipped with masks, gloves and sanitary wipes, Cordova’s Salvation Army bell-ringers met their $2,000 fundraising goal Saturday, Dec. 19, Mead said. Money collected by bell-ringers goes toward local Salvation Army operations.

“I love Cordova, and we’ll make it through this,” Mead said. “It may be a hard year, but, together, we can conquer anything.”
