Coast Guard seizes $211M in cocaine, marijuana

U.S. Coast Guard and Navy personnel have offloaded at San Diego $211 million worth of cocaine and marijuana seized in international waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

The offload of 11,400 pounds of cocaine and 9,000 pounds of marijuana on Monday, Feb. 1 was the result of interdictions made by Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment 407 personnel, aboard the USS Gabriele Giffords and three separate Coast Guard cutter crews between October and December.

Coast Guard narcotics interdiction efforts are aimed at thwarting transnational criminal organizations, which are fueled by drug trafficking money. Such operations attack supply networks in Central and South America.

The offload highlights the joint impacts that a Coast Guard unit along with the Navy can have when working together, Coast Guard officials said.
