New federal mask mandate applies to AMHS travelers

A new order issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requires proper face coverings on public transportation systems, among them the Alaska Marine Highway System, including terminal buildings and on Alaska state ferries.

All persons two years and older must wear masks while in these facilities, AMHS officials said on Monday, Feb. 1. To the extent possible, AMHS will make reasonable accommodation for passengers unable to wear face coverings due to a disability, officials said.

While AMHS currently requires passengers and employees to wear masks, the CDC order makes refusal to wear a face covering a violation of federal law.
