Statewide COVID-19 infections reach 55,259

Infections of the novel coronavirus in Alaska have reached 55,259, with a total of 250 new infections documented on Friday, Feb. 5, including one individual in Cordova, state health officials said.

The statewide death toll from the virus remains at 277 residents and two nonresidents, with no new deaths confirmed, according to Alaska Department of Health and Social Services.

To date, 53,279 residents and 1,980 nonresidents have been infected with COVID-19.

There has been a total of 1,219 hospitalizations. According to the DHSS dashboard 41 people currently hospitalized are confirmed to be COVID positive and three additional patients whose conditions is under investigation. Eleven of these patients were on ventilators.  These numbers are updated, with corrections, daily at covid19.alaska.gov.

New resident cases of the virus on the DHSS data dashboard as of Feb.5, included:

  • Anchorage, 41
  • Wasilla, 33
  • Bethel Census Area, 23
  • Palmer, 17
  • Fairbanks, 13
  • Bethel, Juneau, Kusillvak Census Area, 6
  • Ketchikan, 4
  • Eagle River, 3
  • Matanuska-Susitna Borough, 2
  • Aleutians east Borough, Anchor Point, Cordova, Delta Junction, Dillingham Census Area, North Pole, Seward, Sitka and Soldotna, 1.

Eight-seven new nonresident cases were also identified.  They include 80 in the seafood industry in the Aleutians East Borough, five in the seafood industry at Unalaska, one in Anchorage in the seafood industry, plus one other.

Two nonresidents and two residents were added to the DHSS data dashboard through data verification.

A total of 1,536,911 tests for COVID-19 have been conducted in Alaska to date, including 32,277 tests in the previous seven days.

To date 101,631 shots of the first dose and 37,520 shots of the second dose of COVID vaccine have been given in Alaska for a total of 139,151, according to DHSS. 

DHSS notes that even after being vaccinated people should practice COVID-19 protective measures, including masking, social distancing and hand washing.
