A 45-year-old crew member aboard the F/V Alaska Ocean who suffered a crush injury to his arm was medevaced by the Coast Guard some 30 miles northeast of Cold Bay on Sunday Feb. 21.

The Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak helicopter crew hoisted the man at about 10:30 p.m. and transported him to Cold Bay’s medical clinic to await further transport to Anchorage.

The fishing vessel was 60 miles from Cold Bay when the initial call for help came in and the MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was launched from Cold Bay.

Lt. Joseph Wineke, a 17th District command center watchstander, said the medevac went off efficiently due to good communication between the fishing vessel, the Jayhawk crew and command center. On scene weather at the time of the rescue was an air temperature of 28 degrees, 23-mile-an-hour winds and 11 miles visibility.
