Gale warning stalls Tanner crab fishery

A gale warning issued by the National Weather Service will delay the start of the Prince William Sound Commissioner’s Permit Tanner crab fishery season until Tuesday, March 2.

Alaska Department of Fish and Game officials issued the gale warning early on the morning of Sunday, Feb. 28, saying that if the 48-hour weather forecast issued early on March 1 also contains a gale warning the fishery would again be delayed for another 24 hours.

The National Weather Service marine weather forecast for Prince William Sound is being checked each subsequent day until no gale warning is issued for the upcoming 48-hour period, or until Thursday, March 4, when the season will open regardless of the forecast.
