ASLC launches ‘Small Fry School’ on YouTube

A new free marine program online on YouTube is offering ocean themed topics for preschool and kindergarten-aged children through mid-May, livestreamed from the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward.

Each 30-minute program, via cdv.tiny.us/smallfry offers a story, activities for parents and their child, and a lesson about unique ocean animals. There is no need to purchase additional materials in order to participate. The program, which began on Thursday, March 18, will run every Thursday through May 13 beginning at 11 a.m.

The Small Fry School was first launched in 2018, but due to the pandemic could not resume the program in 2020. This year the program is funded by $20,000 from Alaska 529, an education savings plan giving families the option of a tax-free way to save for education expenses.

“After two successful in-person years we’re excited to start offering a virtual option,” said Laura Woodward, education coordinator at the ASLC.

“Not only will it help us reach more families; it will also allow us to help kids learn about their backyard,” she said. “It’s never too early to start exploring the world around you.”
