Registration is open for the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association’s fishing vessel drill conductor class at Pioneers of Alaska Igloo No. 19 in Cordova on April 27.
The cost is $125 for commercial fishermen and $17 for all others.
Interested mariners may register online at www.amsea.org or call 907-747-3287.
Instructor Joe Chaszar will cover cold-water survival skills, emergency position indicating radio beacons, signal flares and mayday calls.
Also included in the course will be man-overboard recovery; firefighting; flooding and damage control; dewatering pumps, immersion suits and personal flotation devices; helicopter rescue, life rafts, and abandon ship procedures; and emergency drills.
AMSEA is able to offer the class at a reduced cost to commercial fishermen because of support from the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development; the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health; the U.S. Coast Guard; and AMSEA members.
The course provides an opportunity for commercial fishermen and other mariners to get hands-on training with marine safety equipment and learn best practices for surviving emergencies at sea. The course meets U.S. Coast Guard training requirements for drill conductors on commercial fishing vessels.
