Coast Guard officials are teaming up with the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association (AMSEA) to offer dockside exams of commercial fishing vessels and maritime safety education to fishermen in advance of the 2021 Bristol Bay salmon season.

Coast Guard examiners and AMSEA educators will be at King Cove, Sand Point, Port Moller and Chignik from June 1-7 and Dillingham, Egegik and King Salmon from June 14-25.

Phone numbers to schedule an exam are 907-538-4103 for King Cove, 907-764-5071 for Sand Point, 907-891-3824 for Chignik, 907-764-5017 for Dillingham, 907-538-8062 for Egegik and 907-717-6270 or 907-538-9748 for King Salmon.

These exams will address safety issues that may present before an operator gets underway. No fines or other penalties will be issued for problems identified. The exams will address items such as flares, charts, navigational signals, fire extinguishers, emergency position indicating radio beacons and serviceability of immersion suits.

Fishermen are also being encouraged to register for upcoming one-day Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor Classes at Sand Point May 29, Naknek June 10-11 and Dillingham June 12-13.

Registration and more information is at amsea.org or via telephone at 907-747-3287.
