Public input sought on heli-skiing assessment

Public comment will be accepted through Aug. 22 on a draft environmental assessment for a Cordova heli-skiing project involving special use permits for guided activities on 590,000 acres of forest beginning this December.

The draft assessment, instructions for providing comment, and a link to enroll in the project’s email mailing list are online at cdv.tiny.us/heliski2.

Cordova District Ranger Steve Namitz said the agency appreciated the public involvement to date and wants the public to help refine the assessment before making a decision. The final environmental assessment will consider all public input and determine the location and volume of heli-skiing that may be authorized, along with other limitations.

Those commenting are asked to provide their name and address, the title of the proposed project, specific written comments and a signature or other verification of identity. Comments must be within the scope of the proposed action and are recommended to include supporting reasons and evidence.

Comments can be submitted via mail to Steve Namitz, District ranger, Cordova Ranger District P.O. Box 280, 612 Second Street, Cordova, AK 99574; by fax to 907-424-7214; via email to cnfheli@usda.gov; or in person at the Cordova Ranger District Office, upper entrance drop box.
